The History of May 5th
In 1861, Benito Juarez (1806-1872) was the president of Mexico. Mexico has many financial problems. It could not pay the money they had to pay to the other countries. They owed lot of money to France, Spain, and England.
France, Spain, and England sent naval boats to Veracruz, Mexico to demand the money. England and Spain spoke and negotiated with the leaders of Mexico. But the leader of France, Napoleon 3 saw an opportunity. He saw that he could convert Mexico to a French empire to dominate Mexico.
Napoleon sent a large fleet of boats, weapons, and soldiers to Mexico. The French were very prepared and very powerful. The president, Benito Juarez, went to north Mexico to escape the French soldiers.
The French had no fear. They thought the Mexicans would not cause lots of problems. 6,000 French troops marched to attack the city of Puebla.
In the north, Benito Juarez formed a group of 2,000 soldiers. the general Ignacio Zaragoza was going to be leader of the soldiers. The soldiers weren't professional. The soldiers weren't prepared. But the Mexicans had a lot of heart and no fear. They had to protect the city of Puebla! Zaragoza and his men were prepared for defending the city.
The French advanced to the city and assaulted the north. The battle lasted all day. 500 french soldiers died in the battle, and 100 Mexican soldiers died. the french left the city. the Mexicans celebrated the victory.
The battle of Puebla was not very important historically. France eventually dominated Mexico. But for mexico, the victory was symbolic. It was a symbol of unity and patriotism for the people of mexico.
France dominated mexico during 6 years. The French leader of Mexico named Ferdinand Maximilano. In 1867, the soldiers of Benito Juarez captured Maximiliano and killed him.
Nowadays, the 5th of May is not very important in Mexico. It is not an official holiday. but in the state of Puebla, where the victory occurred, there are a lot of parties and event for observing the day.
In the United States, the 5th of May is a popular day, especially in areas with lots of Latino people. It is a celebration of the Mexican culture. There are parties, Mexican food, mariachi music, and typical dancing of mexico.
Lots of people think that the fifth of May is the independence day of Mexico. But that is incorrect.Mexico declared its independence from Spain in September 16, 1810.

"True language learning happens through motivation and relationships" -Katrina Griff
"How can we make students globally prepared when languages are seen as unimportant" -Schmetterlingal

All five points addressed above are important and all somehow relate. It is important that students get the opportunity to think for themselves and teachers shouldn't underestimate our ability. We should also promote language more as a whole and teach language in a way that is fun and easy to understand.

El Hotel Elegante (partes 4-5)
Suddenly, the women gets red and she runs away. She is ashamed and sad. She grabs her suitcases from the room, she moves really fast, and runs out the hotel, without saying "goodbye" to Juan or the receptionist. She takes the car of Uber and escapes in less than three minutes.
She arrives at the airport at Cancun, and in the line for the suitcase check in, she can't find her passport. It is in the room. She yells "oh my gosh!" and starts to cry. She cries a lot. there is an employee at the airline, Delta, they say, "i can help you miss." the women stopped crying and smiles. the employee verifies her license, not the passport, and there is no problem. She doesn't say thank you or give a tip.
The women receives her boarding pass ( the trip is to here and back), leaves her suitcase, and walks to security. he takes the license for identification and starts to walk, but the man of security says "stay here, please." the man says her license is expired! Oh! the women starts to cry, and the man says "Don't cry, please, i can help you." The women stops crying and smiles. the employee gets the director, and says there is no problem. She passes the security, and is happy. She doesn't say thank you or tip.
She looks at the screen to find the exit, and she bought a sandwich and a soda because she is hungry. Suddenly, after she eats the sandwich, she does not feel well. She runs to the bathroom before she gets there she vomits in the center of the aisle, with all of the passengers. She is really embarrassed and she gets red. She Starts to cry when a employee says " it is well miss, don't cry, i can help you." She looks at the man and smiles. she is content. The employees clean the vomit and the women doesn't say thank you or tip.
Finally, she goes to the gate, B4. All of them are boarding the plane, and the women boards also (group 1 because the seat 3C, in first class). She finds her seat and there is a man. he is in a really elegant suit; he is tall and handsome, and the women is very content. Smiling, she blinks her eyebrows(????), and talks. the two have conversation during the whole flight, two hours, and she has positive chemistry and it is good. The eat dinner, drink wine, and laugh. But, suddenly, the man is not well. He vomits on all parts of the seat, including the women. The women is surprised and starts to cry. The vomit is new, and he runs to the bathroom. The assistant runs and says " i can help miss!" the bring towels and clean it all; the women doesn't say thank you or tip.
Very fast, the plane lands and all leave. The women thinks that the man is in the bathroom, and waits. She waits 5 minutes- then, she bangs on the bathroom door. She calls the man. he does not respond. She goes into the bathroom-- the man isn't there! The assistant says that the man did not pay. The women, covered in vomit, without passport (hotel), without license (confiscated),she has to pay for the dinner and the wine: $200. She starts to cry.
Suddenly, she sees a paper in the bathroom. It is not toilet paper. It is a note. It says " thanks for the food, the wine, and the conversation. Now, you can pay for being fake, and don't forget the tip - Paulo (Juan's brother). the women starts to cry a lot and the employees laugh.
Repeated:
No dice gracias, no de la propina
la mujer empieza a llorar
y sonrie

When the women goes to the receptionist there is a problem because the hotel does not accept credit cards. The woman shouts at the receptionist that she is a friend of the owner of the hotel. the short man says there is no problem and he will fix everything. The woman does not say thank you or give him a tip. The short man is calm and doesn't say anything. The woman has another problem. Now she can not open the door to her room. She does not understand the electronic key, so she screams, " The stupid key dopes not work!" Juan helps the women with her key. Again, the woman does not say thank you and does not give him a tip. The woman does not like the room. She says the room is dirty. The woman looks for the owner everywhere. She searches the restaurant but cannot find him.She searches the stores but cannot find him. She looks in the pool but she cannot find him. She goes to Little Juan by the pool and yells at him because he is on his way. Finally, the woman goes to and asks the clerk who says the owner is at the pool. The woman finds out that little Juan is the owner of the elegant hotel.

Unit 3
Easy
1. aereolinea (it sounds a lot like airline so it is easy to tell what the word is)
2. el hotel (this word is easy because it is spelled exactly like the English word for hotel)
3.la semana pasada ( i remember the Spanish week from Spanish 1)
4. el turista (since it has el i know it is masculine and it sounds similar to tourist)
5. la recepcion (sounds similiar to reception and i think of reception desk)
6. viajar ( i remember this from Spanish 1)
7. abordar (this sounds like aboard and it means to board so its easy to remember)
8. el pasaporte (this looks like passport so its easy)
9. avion (i remember this word for plane from spanish 1)
10. tomar un taxi (i know tomar is to take and the word taxi at the end implies that it is to take a taxi
Difficult
1.la llegada (i cant look at it and know that it is arrival- no similar spelling)
2.el alojamientyo (not an easy word to remember for lodging)
3. el ano pasado ( it reminds me of birthdays so i automatically think its birthday)
4. el itinerario ( i didn't even know the English version of this word)
5. la llave (doesn't look anything or sound like the English word key)
Every year I go to Florida, specifically palm beach and Fort Lauder dale, with my best friend Eryn. I've lived in North Carolina so i travel there frequently. I've only ever been on a plane twice and that was to fly to Chicago with my older sister. I've been to lots of states this year for college visits such as Connecticut, Kentucky, and Alabama. I like traveling especially to beaches or places where it is nice and sunny. When it comes to travel language i hope to learn the basics like travel methods.
